Key Personnel

Ben Andrew
Director, UK

About
Ben has over 17 years of specialist engineering experience in the design and analysis of offshore platforms, foundations, cables, and riser systems. He has held numerous project management and technical leadership roles on a variety of projects from concept through to detailed design based out of our London, Kuala Lumpur and Houston offices.
As one of the UK directors, Ben’s current focus is on the development of our minimum facilities platforms and fixed offshore wind offerings for the European, Middle East and Africa markets. Ben is a graduate of Oxford and Imperial Universities with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, and a Master’s in Quantum Physics.

Alex Rimmer
Director, UK

About
Alex joined 2H Offshore in 2004 and has been a UK Director since 2011, based in 2H’s London Office. He is jointly responsible for 2H’s European offices and engineering activities across the EMEA regions.
Alex is a Chartered Engineer with the IMechE and holds a first-class Master of Engineering degree from the University of Bath. He has over 20 years of project execution and management experience developed at 2H and in previous roles.
He is a recognised subject matter expert in dynamic subsea system analysis and engineering and provides technical oversight and consultancy to a broad range of deep and shallow water energy projects. He specialises in all types of drilling, completion and production riser systems, as well as platform well and subsea well systems. For the past 5 years, he has primarily been driving forward 2H UK's floating wind (coupled analysis, power cables, moorings and anchor piles) and CCUS well activities, but continues to support the projects in oil and gas as well.
He has been involved in many challenging and innovative offshore subsea and renewable developments. His energy sector highlights include BP’s Block 31 PSVM and Total’s Kaombo hybrid riser detailed designs, Total’s West of Shetland UK subsea development and many of Aker BP’s well platforms in Norway. Renewable energy highlights include support to industry initiatives with ORE Catapult on floating wind HV power cables, and several pioneering wave energy and floating wind platforms and developments.

Novel, multi-disciplinary concept feasibility evaluation
Global expansion of fixed wind into new regions and deeper waters brings a new set of challenges and considerations for offshore wind developers. Where monopiles were often the top choice, foundation selection is becoming increasingly development specific and requires a more comprehensive investigation prior to selection.
To simplify this extremely complex decision, we use a novel concept screening approach that reviews a wide range of criteria to validate foundation suitability. We assess everything from soil, seabed interaction, fabrication, installation, operations and environmental impact, to the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) over all phases of the lifecycle, factoring in integrity management, life extension and decommissioning. Ultimately this takes any of the guesswork out of foundation selection and eliminates any costly surprises later in the project.
Our goal is to develop the optimal solution, not just something that does the job. We consider every aspect of the project lifecycle to identify where we can create cost and schedule efficiencies later in the project during fabrication, transportation, installation, operations and maintenance.
Holistic systems approach to design
Our meticulousness doesn’t stop with the feasibility assessment. We look at the bigger picture during engineering and design too. Our goal is to develop the optimal solution, not just something that does the job. We consider every aspect of the project lifecycle to identify where we can create cost and schedule efficiencies later in the project during fabrication, transportation, installation, operations and maintenance.
Optimised installation strategies that reduce time to “first wind”
Leaning on our extensive experience delivering minimum facility platforms, we have created opportunities to lower installation costs and reduce the time to “first wind”. Partnerships with local manufacturers and fabrication yards and creative approaches to installation and scheduling have enabled us to streamline our delivery processes as well as minimise the environmental impact of the project.
In-house geotechnical expertise
We leverage the expertise and experience of our in-house geotechnical team in all our fixed wind projects to optimise design and installation to meet local environmental regulations. This could include proposing solutions that limit the disturbance on the soil or reduce noise.
