SE Asia Minimum Facilities Platform Design

2H designed a platform solution and installation process that reduced cost, accelerated installation and enabled early production for an operator in South East Asia.

Background 

An operator in South East Asia won a risk sharing contract to develop a field, located in South East Asia. Due to the proximity of a nearby processing facility the field development plan included an unmanned minimum facilities wellhead platform housing two production wells along with provisions for future gas lift that would be tied back using an 8km flexible flowline. A conductor supported platform was selected as one of the possible platform solutions among other light weight structures. 

Solution & Execution 

2H won the engineering and design bid competition after proposing a conductor supported modular offshore structure (CoSMOS) design. The design emerged as the lowest cost and shortest lead time platform solution for the development. CoSMOS can be entirely installed from a jack-up drilling rig, which significantly reduces project cost by eliminating expensive conventional offshore installation. 2H also proposed a two-part installation campaign with a fast-track schedule enabling early production. 

2H took the role of engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCi) contractor. The engineering scope, including the platform structure and facilities, was performed by the 2H team in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team was also responsible for the specification of topsides facilities, procurement and delivery of topside equipment, along with management of construction activities that were performed by a sub-contractor. Installation activities were executed with an integrated installation team consisting of 2H, the operator and the rig with 2H managing and supervising the subcontractors such as installation spread providers and construction crew, while liaising with the rig crew. The installation was carried out in two stages as planned, with the substructure installed early allowing drilling to take place in parallel with the topsides facilities construction in the yard. The topside was subsequently installed in the second phase of the installation campaign, accelerating the overall project schedule. 

Challenges 

During project execution, the choice of drilling rig for the platform installation experienced a few changes and was only finalised a month before the platform installation campaign was due to begin. 2H overcame this by including a modular rig interface in the design, one of the benefits of the CoSMOS platform in comparison to other rig installable platform solutions which typically do not have this feature. 

Another challenge commonly experienced with lightweight structures is reducing the topsides facilities footprint and weight. By using a multiphase flow meter and diversifying power supply from three different power sources (solar panels, nitrogen racks and diesel powered cranes), 2H reduced the topsides payload and improved redundancy significantly. 

Results 

The CoSMOS platform was successfully designed, delivered and installed within 10 months, and ahead of schedule. This milestone was achieved with approx. 225,000 man hours and zero lost time incidents (LTI), thanks to the implementation of and adherence to QHSE procedures throughout the project. 2H’s experience in project management and working with multiple contractors ensured that the operator achieved their goal for early production smoothly and cost-effectively.
